Hyperlinks: The Secret to SEO Dominance

Hyperlinks are one of the main factors in optimizing your website. They help google crawler bots more cohesively probe your website, and if they see a multitude of credible sites linking to you, they will deem you authoritative, therby, ranking you on the google search engine more than likely depending on how long you have been acquiring backlinks for and the number of backlinks obtained. There are ways to effectively build and understand hyper texts, which I will get into shortly, but to really be cognizant as to how a hyperlink is structured, one needs to understand Anchor texts also known as the clickable text within an internal link and hyperlink, but for the sake of this blog, we are only going to discuss their role in a hyperlink. Anchor text optimization is one of the most important factors in search engine optimization (SEO). It plays a crucial role in helping search engines understand the context and relevance of a link, which can lead to improved rankings for your website in search results.

What are Backlinks/Hyperlinks and why are they important for SEO?

Backlinks, also known as hyperlinks, are links from other websites to your own. Usually, you will receive a backlink via a hyperlink from guest posts or niche edits, which are the two most recognizable and some of the most effective linking methods. Hyperlinking is considered to be one of the most important ranking factors in SEO, as they signal to search engines that your website is authoritative and trustworthy. If you are still confused as to what a hyperlink is, do not worry, it is a pretty difficult to understand especially without context, which is why I am here to clarify the concept for you all by expounding exactly what goes into it.

What goes into a hyperlink?

Hyperlinks are, again, links from another website onto yours that can take the form of pictures, or highlighted texts. To determine if a picture might be a hyperlink, hover your cursor over the picture and see if your mouse takes the form of a hand, which is your cursor indicating that this can be a hyperlinked picture if composed with precision (see FAQs at the bottom of this blog to learn what goes into structuring a hyperlink accurately). If clicked on, you can (if it is an external link rather than an internal link) be directed to another website that the picture is associated with.

If you take a look at this blog, I have a few pictures on this page that, if you click on it, will take you to other independent websites. This is one form of a backlink, also known as a hyperlink, that directs the inquisitive user from one domain to another. A dissimilarly structured but related form a hyperlink can take is in a colored text, similar to the orange ones showcased on this blog. However, I am using these orange text links for internal linking purposes, which do not function the same as hyperlinks do. With that being said, the orange links on my page (scroll down below) could very well have been hyperlinks if I had instead chose to direct it to another domain instead of a page/post on my website.聽 A hyperlink/backlink and internal links all may appear to look the same, but they each bear their own unique and necessary functions. Essentially, any internal link can be a hyper/backlink, and any backlink can be an internal link depending on what you chose to direct the link to.

Now, as you may have noticed, each orange text has words or phrases instilled to give relevance to the hyperlink. Anchor texts are the most important method to optimize a hyperlink for various reasons. For one, they establish relevancy to your website and help the referring website’s reputation if the link is relevant to their domain’s content. Anchor texts come in natural, partial, brand, and exact match keywords. Think of it like the main keyword of a blog. If you create a blog, you are ranking for a keyword that you might have found via Keyword Explorer on some sort of paid site tool. This keyword is considered to be an exact match keyword as if your website is ranking for a keyword, then using it as a hyperlink or even internal link anchor text is an exact match. Now, if I expand on this keyword or replace a word or a few words in it with a synonymous word, then it is defined as a partial anchor text.

Lastly, if I rephrase the keyword word completely to where it has no trace of any exact match keyword, meaning this anchor phrase is not being ranked anywhere on your blog, then it is a natural anchor text. I will not get into brand anchor texts here, as they are inherently much easier to understand than the rest. If this is confusing, don’t worry, I will get into some examples to help you conceptualize it further, but these are essentially what anchor texts are in simplest terms. Now with this out of the way, I will be covering the necessary interconnected constituents in order to optimize hyperlinks effectively, the most notable contributor being anchor texts

Best Anchor Text Ratio For Hyperlinks馃敆

Why you should use a 60/20/20/10 anchor text ratio

The ratio for optimizing hyperlinks is ambiguous, as everybody has their own unique optimization approach. However, I still longed to get a mostly accurate empirical analysis, as yes, while nobody will ever truly have an absolute understanding of the Googles Search Engine, there are ways to understand it better than others, therefore, I decided to be resilient, uncovering an accurate anchor text method that has not only worked for me, but clients I have helped rank on Googles search Engine, as testified by multiple of my clients In-depth dental SEO feedback. This study was conducted not only by trial and error but by obtaining information from multiple discoveries that search engine tools and SEOs have unveiled to the public. I have combined their analyses, while doing my own empirical research, coming to a weighted conclusion that using a 60/20/20/10 anchor text ratio for hyperlink optimization is the most effective strategy for the following reasons that shall be provided below:

  • Natural anchor text is the most effective type of anchor text for SEO. Remember, natural anchors are anchors that do not have the keyword incorporated into the word or phrase, but rather, one that is synonymous to it. It signals to search engines that your backlinks are natural and organic, alerting Google of your reputable web page. According to a 2016 study by Backlinko, natural anchor texts are the most common type of anchor text used by top-ranking websites. The reason for this is that it is near Impossible for Google to flag natural anchor texts for many justifiable reasons. The rationale being that natural anchor texts tend to be seamless incorporated anchors that flow with the sentence it is instilled in, hence why natural anchors are much harder to detect as spam. This is essentially the basis as to why it is recommended to use natural anchors considerably throughout your website, most notably directing the majority of them to your home page, an effective method in which I will get into later.
  • Partial anchor text is also seen as very effective for SEO. This is because partial anchor texts still signal to search engines that your backlinks are relevant to your content while not looking as spammy as exact match anchor text. These hyperlinks are necessary so Google can more easily identify the contents of your website. The reason you do not need to overdo these types of anchors in order for google to understand your website is because natural anchors are able to convey the message just as effectively as well. A 2022 study by Ahrefs found that partial anchor texts are much more effective than exact match anchor texts for increasing click-through rates (CTRs) and organic traffic, for partial anchors are essentially enhanced and more natural exact match anchors.
diagram showing natural and partial anchor texts
  • Exact match anchor texts can be effective for SEO, but it should be used sparingly. If you overdo exact match anchor texts, search engines may flag your website as spammy. A 2019 study by Moz found that websites that used a mix of natural and partial anchor text outperformed websites that used a lot of exact match anchor texts. While exact match anchors used to be the only method utilized for SEO many years ago, the algorithm has shifted significantly, resulting in google not regarding exact match anchors to the same stature as before.
  • Branded anchor texts are also integral anchors to have in a hyperlink in order to rank on Google. The reason branded anchors are seen as valuable to Google crawlers is, while they may seem like stuffing, is because in order to have a branded URL point to your website, a post has to directly address your company and mention you in a handful of the posts sentences. This signifies to Google that authoritative websites like and respect your content and, therefore, will make Google inclined to rank you over your competitors. With this said, however, make sure your branded anchor texts are used sparingly. There is a reason I am saying 20 percent should be branded and not the majority despite their effectiveness, and that is because if you are seen over doing branded anchors, Google may flag you out of suspicion, as branded anchors should not be that easy to obtain. That is why I recommend 20%, for it is still a respectable sum of anchors being branded and, thereby, giving you the needed authority to potentially rank, while not overdoing it to the point of risking stuffing.

pie chart showing the recommended anchor text distribution: natural anchor text (5070%), partial match anchor text (2030%), branded anchor text (1020%), and exact match anchor text (15%)

How these studies helped me reach my analysis

The studies I cited above helped me to reach my analysis of using a 60/20/20/10 anchor text ratio in the following ways:

  • The Backlinko study showed me that natural anchor text is the most effective type of anchor text for SEO, as they have once claimed and I had vindicated. Backlinos study gave me the newfound confidence to incorporate most of my anchors as natural, and to my convenience, it most certainly has had positive everlasting effects.
  • The Ahrefs study showed me that partial anchor text is also effective for SEO for many reasons, but it is, while not more “risky” than exact match anchor texts per say, but may not render as effective if you constantly utilize these types of anchors. This is because it may be considered as stuffing and, therefore, google will not regard it as highly as they would natural. This is why I recommend using partial anchor text for a smaller percentage (20%) of your backlinks.
  • The Moz study showed me that using a mix of natural and partial anchor text is better than using a lot of exact match anchor texts. Exact match anchors are very interesting to me and ones that are difficult to put my finger on. The reason for this is that exact match anchors, sometimes, do not feel needed at all for the matter. Some websites have testified this by only requesting natural hyperlinks ands ranking profoundly on the Google SERPs page as a result. With all of this being said, however, to be on the safe side of things, I would recommend using exact match anchors, as they have been around for ages, but utilize them sparingly. This is why I recommend using exact match anchor text only (10%) of time time or even as low as (5%).

How my analysis has worked

I have been using a 60/20/20/10 anchor text ratio in my clients, and my own backlink strategy for over a year now, all of us yielding noteworthy results. My website has improved its ranking in search results for many of my target keywords, and I am currently receiving more organic traffic than ever before. The key reason you are able to traverse through my blog at this very moment is because this anchor text strategy has helped me rank incomprehensibly, therefore, it is safe to say this optimization approach renders as an effective one. For example, I helped my clients attract new patients through dental marketing strategies with a heavy focus on quality hyperlink acquisition, and they are currently in the process of working their way up onto the first page.

Another testimonial that I shall be presenting is one of a client who had been struggling to rank for his target keyword “dental implants houston.” A few months after I had launched his website, he amounted to a top 10 ranking position on Google using the 60/20/20/10 anchor text ratio backlink strategy, the client being “Best Dental Houston”, a dental practice whose website hasn’t even been up for longer than 3 months.

Of course, there are many other factors that contribute to SEO success, such as the quality of your content and the overall structure of your website. However, using a 60/20/20/10 anchor text ratio is a great way to improve your website’s ranking authority in search results, subsequently resulting in increased organic traffic. At the dental climb, we’ve utilized this anchor strategy, and as of today it has returned substantial results. As of recent, our SEO firm has helped Utah dentists, a large dental market for out company, get to the first page, as well as SEO that has ranked Houston Dentists rank highly on Google.

Why is anchor text ratio necessary?馃敆

While I already covered the focal components as to why Hyperlink anchor ratios are important, it does not hurt to go over it in greater detail, especially since I have yet to highlight a few other important aspects. Again restated: Proper Anchor text ratio is necessary in order to avoid being penalized by Google for spammy backlinking practices. Even though Google’s Penguin 4.0 update has toned down on spam penalization and detection, Google still has methods to detect black hat strategies, one of those methods being through the quality and spread of anchor texts.

If Google sees that the majority of all links to your website have an exact match anchor text or even partial anchor texts, they will be suspicious. This is because spammers often use these types of exact match anchor texts to try to manipulate their search engine rankings.

If you are caught using spammy backlinking practices, Google could penalize your website, or even temporarily suspend it. Even if you are not penalized, Google may not regard your backlinks as highly as they would if they were more naturally distributed.

Backlink Relevancy

Something that does not get talked about enough but most certainly should is the relevancy of ones backlinks. All acquired backlinks should be obtained from websites that specialize in your exact niche, broad niche, or a website that covers your niche. What do I mean by this?

Suppose you are a dentist and are outreaching to other companies for backlinks. Some of the companies you might want to reach out to are dental magazine or dental town. However, it is also wise to reach out to agencies in the health care realm rather than simply dental, such as healthcare market place or one of similar relevancy. Lets say you are a SEO agency for Utah dentists, or anything such as lawyers, small businesses , or what have you, the same process applies. acquire your niche and acquire backlinks from sites under your niches umbrella. You will also want websites that have little relation to your niche all in the same, for this tells google your site has reached a wide audience and is captivating websites that it should not be, thereby, your website is of high regard. So if you have a small business that sells coffee to customers, you can outreach to high quality website who might be interested in creating a coffee blog for your website if they’re to be compensated. I’ve seen dozens of websites of dissimilarity link to each other multiple times, such as a cooking website linking to a dental practice, for that cooking website had a section of a page dedicated to dental hygiene, for the blog talked about the importance of hygiene after eating cookies.

In summary, there are three methods to approaching the backlink acquiring process. The first is to approach websites in your niche, the second is to approach websites under your niches umbrella, and the third is to request a guest post related to your topic from an unrelated high quality website. If you still need assistance, contact our SEO agency at The Dental Climb聽and we will explain to you the process further

The anchor text ratio:

Backlinks to do not exist without anchor texts, hence why this ratio is so vital to consider. A good anchor text ratio is a mix of different types of anchor texts, including:

  • Exact match anchor texts:聽These are anchor texts that are the exact same as the keywords you are targeting.
  • Partial match anchor texts:聽These are anchor texts that contain some of the keywords you are targeting, but not all of them.
  • Branded anchor texts:聽These are anchor texts that contain your brand name.
  • Natural anchor texts:聽These are anchor texts that are simply descriptive of the content of your web page.

The ideal anchor text ratio is different for every website, but a good rule of thumb is to have a mix of all four types of anchor texts, with no one type making up more than 60% of your total backlinks, hence why my natural anchor text incorporation does not exceed the 60% agreed upon limit

How to achieve a natural anchor text ratio

There are a few things you can do to achieve a natural anchor text ratio:

  • Create high-quality content that is informative and engaging to your target audience. When people find your content valuable, they are more likely to link to it naturally.
  • Promote your content on social media and other websites. The more people who see your content, the more likely you are to get backlinks from a variety of sources.
  • Build relationships with other bloggers and website owners in your industry. When you have relationships with other people, they are more likely to link to your content.
  • Avoid using spammy backlinking practices, such as buying backlinks or link building schemes.

How to diversify Anchored Hyperlinks:

A good rule of thumb is to have 1/3 of your website’s total backlinks referring to your home page after the second month of acquiring backlinks has been completed (I will get into what I mean soon), while the rest should be directed to other articles and blogs on your website. This means that the majority of your website-obtained backlinks are going to be pointing to your home page, as having 1/3 of your backlinks bolstering your home page is a significant sum compared to your other pages, which is exactly the ratio you want if your home page’s growth to be the focal focus.

Why after the second month do I start the 1/3 Ratio?

During the first month of obtaining backlinks from different companies related to your niche, or companies that create blogs that have direct correlation to your niche, you will want to have all of your acquired backlinks pointing to your home page. A good practice is to start acquiring backlinks around a month after your website launches, then, once you start obtaining backlinks, after two months you will want to commence the 1/3 method. During the first month (after 30 days), make sure all acquired backlinks point to your home page. Then, when the second month comes around, you will want half of all backlinks pointing to your home page, while the other half are diversified across your website. After the first two months have gone by, you will want to start the 1/3 method and start to gradually increase the acquisition process every month or so until around month 6, or whenever you begin to start noticing significant page one results

diagram showing a website with a backlink from another website

Remember the 60/20/20/10 ratio? well, the 60 percent natural anchors you are going to have directed to your website should primarily go to your home page. This is because your website home page is going to want to see the highest level of visibility on the Google SERPs page, and by primarily directing natural anchor text backlinks to your home page, Google is going to have a hard time identifying it as an anchor unworthy of bestowing your site with hefty DR increase, which is basically your websites backlink profile. The consensus ratio to the 60% natural backlinks to have directed to your home page is 50% of that. So, for example, let’s say you acquire 12 backlinks in one month, then around 7 of those backlinks will have natural anchors, as 60 percent of 12 is around 7. Remember, 1/3 of all backlinks should be directed to your home page, and in this case in my example: 4 will. Now, if you recall, half of all your backlinks directed to your home page (4 in my example) should be natural. Coming to this conclusion, we can deduce that half of four is 2, therefore, 2 of the backlinks forwarded to your home page should be natural. This does require some problem-solving and basic arithmetic knowledge, but once understood, you will have considerably enhanced the backlink acquisitional process. These tactics have been testified not only through my success, but clients I have worked with. This analytical analysis is not said without considerable weight and research. Google’s Bard search engine tool also argues that this is an effective strategy to use, explaining how it helps make your site amass considerable reputation through Google Crawler Bots.

Additional tips for improving your anchor text ratio:

We have covered most everything already, so there may not be a need to read through this last bit. However, some information might prove to be of use, so it may not hurt to check this last bit of information out

  • Use a variety of different anchor texts when linking to your own website. Avoid using the same exact anchor text over and over again.
  • When guest blogging, try to get backlinks with your brand name as the anchor text. This will help to increase brand awareness.
  • When submitting your website to directories and article repositories, use descriptive anchor texts that accurately reflect the content of your web page.
  • Monitor your anchor text ratio regularly. You can find search engine solutions via SEO tools such as Ahrefs, SEMrush, and Moz to do this. If you notice that any one type of anchor text is making up more than 50% of your total backlinks, you need to take steps to diversify your anchor text profile.

Backlink Growth

To optimize your website’s backlink volatility, increase your monthly backlink count by 2 to maybe even 10 backlinks a month depending on your niche’s difficulty for the first six months, or up until you begin to notice substantial ranking results. Do not mass acquire these backlinks, for Google will deem them as spammy-purchased backlinks and, therefore, penalize your website for an extended period of time. Instead, obtain backlinks weekly. For example, if you want to obtain 15 backlinks a month, diversify it by having 4 sent to your site the first week, then 3 the second, 5 the third, and 3 the fourth. Then, as the month comes to an end, you will rinse and repeat the diversification process however you deem fit, for as long as you diversify it, regardless of how you spread it out, it is acceptable, but it is safest to make sure the ratio is around the same rather than having 8 the first week then around 2 the next. Something important to understand is that you do not need to stop acquiring backlinks ever, however, the backlink outreach process is a strenuous and tedious one that can take a heavy tool, for sometimes, reputable domains will require you to take ongoing steps in order to obtain a backlink, hence why I recommend halting the process for a little while once you have achieved an entrenched ranking position. Once you reach month six of acquiring backlinks (or however long it may take), maintain your current backlink growth rate or reduce it slightly, depending on your ranking position. If your ranking position has not improved by month six, do not increase your backlink growth rate significantly.

In summary, stop or slow down your backlink growth efforts once you see your website reach the first page of search engine results pages (SERPs).

How to Know if Backlinks Are Helping

To determine if your backlinks are helping, track your website’s domain authority (DA) using a site explorer tool such as Ahrefs, SEMrush, or Moz. If your DA increases, this is a good indication that your website authority is also increasing. Do not get discouraged if it appears as if the hyperlinks are actually hurting your site, because truth be told, they aren’t. Remember that Penguin 4.0 has eliminated spammy backlinks hindering your sites development due to competitors raiding their competition with unwarranted harmful links. If you see any sort of negative fluctuation in your ranking position, do not fret, for this is a normal occurrence and has nothing to do with the backlinks you have obtained. For the first 6 months or even up to a year depending on your competition, it is likely to see your hierarchical position to go down and then up again. This process, once Google has fully indexed your site and its backlinks, will come to a close and your position will be fixed.

Keep in mind that DA is a vanity metric and can be misleading. However, it is still a useful metric to track, especially since it has been shown to have some weight with search engines.

If you are running a company that needs a high ranking position in SERPs, you need to optimize everything you can, including your backlinks. This will help you to build trust with your clients and show them that you are committed to using the best possible methods for their websites.

Examples:

When optimizing your dental blog for search engines, it’s important to consider various anchor text strategies that enhance your content’s readability and search engine visibility.

Natural Anchor Texts: If your blog is targeting the keyword “dental braces,” a natural anchor text could be “orthodontic procedure” or something related.

Brand Anchor Texts: Additionally, you may choose to use your practice’s brand name or page URL. While brand and URL anchors are less relevant to the page content, they can be beneficial in a broader external linking strategy as backlinks. It’s crucial to use these anchors judiciously in internal linking, and avoid using your URL as an internal link, especially to maintain a professional appearance.

Partial Anchor Texts: If your page is focused on “wisdom tooth removal,” a partial anchor text could be “wisdom teeth procedure” since it retains the term “wisdom” while offering a slight rephrasing. Similarly, for a blog targeting “affordable dentures,” you might consider anchor text like “inexpensive dentures” or “affordable denture services.” These partial anchor texts incorporate key components of your ranking keywords while offering some rephrased or expanded elements.

Exact Match Anchor Texts: If your blog targets “How to floss,” an exact match anchor text would be “How to floss.” Another instance might be “dental Invisalign Houston.” Exact match keywords should be used with caution and in moderation to maintain a professional and search engine-friendly approach.

How Can I Identify Content Gaps in My Dental Blog?

The difference between dofollow and nofollow backlinks is that dofollow backlinks pass link equity, while nofollow backlinks do not. Link equity, also known as “link juice,” is a measure of the authority and importance of a website. When a website has a lot of link equity, it is more likely to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs).

Dofollow backlinks are the most common type of backlink. They are the default type of link created when you link to another website. When a website has a dofollow backlink from another website, it means that the linking website is endorsing the other website and its content.

Nofollow backlinks are used to tell search engines that you do not want to pass link equity to a particular website. This can be useful for sponsored links, links to user-generated content, and links to websites that you do not trust.

Here is a table that summarizes the key differences between dofollow and nofollow backlinks:

It is important to note that both dofollow and nofollow backlinks can be valuable for SEO. Dofollow backlinks can help to improve your website’s ranking in SERPs, while nofollow backlinks can help to improve your website’s visibility and traffic.

Here are some tips for using dofollow and nofollow backlinks effectively:

  1. Use dofollow backlinks for links to high-quality websites that you trust and that are relevant to your own website.
  2. Use nofollow backlinks for sponsored links, links to user-generated content, and links to websites that you do not trust.
  3. Avoid using too many nofollow backlinks, as this can hurt your SEO.
  4. Make sure that your backlinks are coming from a variety of different websites.

By following these tips, you can use dofollow and nofollow backlinks to improve your website’s SEO and visibility.

How To Create A Hyperlink | The Dental Climb

Well, that wraps everything up. In summation (and do not forget this), hyperlinks are insurmountable to the success. However, remember that simply acquiring hyperlinks is not enough, as it is of utmost importance to optimize them cohesively and in an effective natural manner in order to signify to Google that the content you have is respectable and the backlinks naturally acquired. Backlink acquisition is difficult, and I understand that, as contacting reputable agencies is a task that takes a lot of time, energy, and effort spent only to sometimes amount to nothing. Unfortunately, though, that does not change the importance and effects that hyperlinks/backlinks have on your website, as I’d go as far as to say that the reason most all blogs are on the top of the SERPs page is due to backlinks. One may like to make the analogy that backlinks are the blade, while content is the handle; both being of great importance, but in order to work your way up, it is vital for your blade to pierce deep enough, showcasing the strength of your website in relation to your competitors. Remember: Hyperlinks are the key to success, and without them, ranking on Google will unfortunately more than likely never happen no matter how strong your content is. Having quality content adjoined with strong backlinks is what is vital in getting your practice over the top and this is the only way such a feat can be done. The good news is that this blog exists in order to enlighten you on everything that needs to be incorporated into the components of the hyperlink aspect of ranking and the intricate process that goes along with it.
